Beat the Winter Blues by Joining In
Sometimes the grey skies and gloomy winter can give you the fashion blues. So I beat those blues back this weekend by layering a few blue pieces to make a warm and fashionable winter statement when meeting up with my girlfriends for brunch at The Liberty Tavern in Arlington, Va. We were all getting a little cabin fever from the snow so we met up before our sons basketball game to grab a bite to eat (brunch $21 and good) and catch up. Dressing in layers works great when going from the cold outside to a warm venue inside. Still feeling blah, add some personality to your winter look by layering a pinstripe button up under your sweater. Pattern play is sure to lighten up any look. What piece are you wearing this season to beat back the winter blues?

Looking for a good place in Alexandria, Virginia to eat? Well look no further and check out Delia's Brick Oven Pizza. It is the perfect place to catch something to eat before or after you catch an IMAX movie at the AMC Hoffman Movie Theater. This is what my family had when we stooped by after watching the Hobbit. It was as good as it looked.

Friday Jean Day
Happy Friday! I recently posted that it is ok to wear skinnies to work in accordance with your office policy so I thought that I would share a few pictures of my coworkers and I sporting our jeans on jeans day to raise money for the Combined Federal Campaign! It is funny how a good pair of jeans can make you feel right at home! Everyone just seems a bit more comfortable. I paired my Nine West jeans with a printed tailored Blazer from Target, a striped shirt and holiday baubles from Ross. You can pair your jeans with just about anything and be confidant and stylish on jeans day!
Here is a list of the places to finds some nice jeans that we like that we thought we would share:

Skinny Jeans: Are They Appropriate for Work or Not?
Recently I received a question from a local Professionista who wrote in and asked me if it was ok to wear skinnies to work? Ten years ago I would have probably told her no, but since business casual has started to become the norm for most American workplaces and more than half of employers participate in “Casual Friday” in one fashion or another, so I say yes, skinnies are now work appropriate if worn the right way. Skinnies are a bit tighter and more form fitting, so if you are thinking of which ones to select, I would recommend that you stick to a dark wash denim and steer away from jeggings. The challenge is to style your skinnies in a way that still keeps you looking professional. You want people at work to walk away saying “Wow, that was a great point she made” not “ Wow, Baby Got Back!” So next time you are dressing for Casual Friday use these tips to wear skinnies at work without sacrificing style or professionalism:
(pintrest)
- Wear skinnies with a long jacket or cardigan : The long cardigan are a great alternative to jackets or sweaters and give you great hip coverage. You can wear it with an untucked blouse and dress it up with accessories.
(Old Navy)
- With a button up and a Sweater: This look is perfect for those team meeting is the cold conference room. It is layered, casual yet pulled together.
(1.Real Simple 2. Banana Republic)
- With a tailored blazer: If your offices is one the more conservative to start then you will want to dress up your jeans so you still look pulled together and professional. Opt for a blazer in plaid or pattern to spice your look up a little.
- With a cropped sweater or jacket: A good sweater jacket has a similar feel to tweed so you can be comfortable pairing this look with a great pair of dark denim jeans when presenting next week’s goals to your team.
- Wear the right shoes: You want to create a nice long leg line while still looking polished, so try some cute flats, a loafers or a black pump.
- Wear the right accessories: You can never go wrong with a delicate or statement necklace, a belt that pops, a simple earring or ring and a nice watch or bangles bracelets.
SWWC: Orange You Having Fun with Color Yet
Color Crush:
Orange and Turquoise
Tired of the Plain Jane black suit look that you have rocked once a week for the last year? Start this year off with a bang! Bring your suit back to life with these 3 color tips:
- Be Bright- Use the basic suit as base and put on the brightest items you own. The bright pieces will become the star and the suit will serve as the background.
- Contrast Colors- Say no to matchy-matchy accessories and opt for something in a contrasting color and texture. The contrast will really energize your look and make your outfit pop!
- Go Tribal- Pull out those beautiful beads, geometric prints and let them really bring a level of texture and interest into your look.

SWWC: 2013- A Year in Review
Happy New Year Professionistas! This is one of my favorite times a year because it gives me time to reflect on the friends we have made, the fashion's we've worn and the fun we have had. I am very excited for this new year and all the fresh new ideas, trends and opportunities that come with it. My new year resolution is to focus on organization. 2013 was extremely successful and busy, so I am looking to organize and simplify in 2014. What are your new years resolutions? Thank you so much for joining me on my journey to become So Work Week Chic! Lets recap on all the fun we had:
January
In January, we started the year off feeling the power of purple print, we saw red skinnies everywhere and began layering textures.
February
In February we crushed on anything citrus, styled for the Super Bowl, and lived in printed scarves.
March
In March, we were feeling the Americana trend, hung out with the author and co-founder of Femworking, Amy, and sported a relaxed take on the many black and white mash ups.
April
In April we learned how to make a black blazer a staple in every outfit from mommy blogger and Femworking co-founder, Kelley; we found a way to keep our Zara pumps dry and still be cute and we saw how beauty blogger Janelle translated the bright blazer trend into casual Fridays.
May
In May we were staying preppy in print, sharing how to find something formal and fabulous fast as I did for my daughter's cotillion and having a blast out at the theater with friends for a good cause.
June
In June, we learned how to stay easy breezy in our maxi dresses at an outdoor event from Kamola at 99 Boxes of Shoes on the Wall, shared tips on how to stand out at a Monday meeting, and joined Hello Fashion's obsession with chambray.
July
In July we melted in mint, shared best practices when preparing a memorable prom, I attended the graduation of two of my children (Amen to that!), and stayed cool during our sightseeing trips with family.
August
In August we sported black and white like it was going out of style, uncovered monthly membership shopping sites and reveled in the generosity of friendship, and blazed a trail at work.
September/ October
In September and October opted for layers, went sleeveless, took style notes from the iconic first lady Michelle Obama and held a walking meeting.
November
In November, we fell in love with fall, shared thanksgiving tips and was wowed by Jimmy Choo and Nicole Kidman's new look.
December
In December, I went blonde, partied like a rock star and found my authentic style.
What a year! I thank you for hanging with us and we look forward to seeing how you become So Work Week Chic in 2014!
